Autumn Outdoors

Now is the time for safety preparations for autumn outdoors! Take advantage of this beautiful season in the Northwest to enjoy fresh air and to prepare for the changes ahead. Notice the temperature drop from a few weeks ago? With that change it is time to have a vision for safety.  The safer our outdoor environment is, the more beauty we can find in the season.

One of the biggest problems that we face is the risk of slipping and falling. As summer transitions into autumn, there will be many more trip hazards and slick surfaces than usual. However, most people fail to consider these potential hazards because they are not as obviously dangerous as the potential icy sidewalks that will turn up in a fall frost or a winter freeze.

Light Up The Outdoors!

It is getting darker earlier, and stumbling around a dark garage or walkway greatly increases the risk of a fall. Keep your walk areas lit up! Check your supply of light bulbs for the outdoor fixtures so you have available replacement for the coming months. Change those light bulbs as soon as you see the need. Waiting for another day is not worth the fall risk! Bright, safe walking paths and doorways are a welcome sight to visitors and for your own coming and goings.

Clear Up The Outdoors!

As much as we need light around walkways, we also need to keep our sidewalks clear. Trim the bushes near the walking areas so they are not a hazard for tripping.  Sweep the twigs and leaves away before they get wet and slick on the porch and doorway areas. This becomes especially problematic when leaves get wet during a fall rainstorm. Additionally, be sure to keep leaves from clogging up your gutter in order to protect your house.

Need help with your seasonal preparation? Invite a family member, grandchild, or friend for these fall chores. Afterwards, enjoy hot tea or hot chocolate together!
